When Shawn Baldwin, Chairman of Capital Management
Group began to work on value Creation series, he decided to start it
with a famous personality, Carlos Slim. He is a Mexican business magnate
and investor. He is richest person on earth surpassing Bill gates. He
owns a company known as America Movil. It is Latin America’s largest
mobile phone carrier. Carlos Slim was taught basic business practices by his father.
At the early age of 12, Slim bought shares in a Mexican bank. Soon, he earned 200 pesos a week by working in his father’s company. Later on, he went to study civil engineering where he also taught algebra and linear programming. After graduation, he began his career as a trader in Mexico. He went on to form his own brokerage firm. He focused on companies within construction, real estate and mining in his early career.
He has been vice-president of the Mexican Stock Exchange and president of Mexican Association of Brokerage Houses. He was the first person to become president of the Latin American Committee of the New York Stock Exchange Administration Council. He remained in this position from 1996 to 1998. When Shawn Baldwin met with Carlos Slim, he found that despite being rich, he has a very simple lifestyle. He still prefers to drive by himself. Shawn Baldwin asked Carlos Slim about the formula of his success.
He stated that one should not allow negative feelings to control his mind. He also told that one should live the present fully. He also suggested that when you decide to do something, you should do it quickly. During crises, some people are interested in getting out but that’s the situation when he is interested in getting in.
